Zvartnots Dance Ensemble was founded on December 9, 1989 by 18 year old Vartan Aghajanyan. The first concert on March 17, 1991 was so stunning that it lead the group to great popularity, and eventually resulted in many concert tours in San Diego, San Francisco, and Fresno. In After only 3 years of hard work, Zvartnots was given the privilege to be the first group to perform in its homeland, Armenia. Numerous performances were given in Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor, Spitak, Abovyan, Charentsavan, and Tsakhadzor. Thereafter, Zvartnots Dance Ensemble succeeded in all of their performances, which have respectively been entitled: 1993, Mayr Hayastan; 1994, Yerkir Nairi; 1996, Zartonk; 1997, Ghoghanj Hayutyan; 1998, Hayots Ashkhar; 2000, Armenner.
On January 16, 2000, Zvartnots celebrated its tenth year of hard work. A concept performance in honor of the 1700 anniversary of Christianity was given in Glendale, California, called, "Christian Armenia." In February of the same year, the Republic of Armenia: Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports Affair and The Dancing Union of Armenia invited Zvartnots for a concert throughout Armenia and Artsakh. On July 9, 2000, a concert identical to the performances given in Armenia was given in Glendale, California, titled "Chanapar Depi Yerkir." Between July 21 and August 12, 2000, the group was given the opportunity, once again, to perform in their homeland. In Armenia, the ensemble performed at The National Opera Theater, Gyumri, and Gharabagh, where they received numerous standing ovations. Furthermore, upon their return to the United States, from September 15 to 17, 2000, the group participated in The Armenian Relief Society Detroit Chapter's 90th anniversary.
During the year 2002, Zvartnots was an active participant of several astonishing performances: one June 28 at the Pasadena Lake Avenue Church alongside the famous Armenian composer, Ara Gevorgian; On August 24 in the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Theater dedicated to the 10th anniversary of The Armenia Fund Incorporated. The ensemble also took part in two concerts for the famous Armenian singer, Nune Yesayan, which took place on September 8, 2002, in San Francisco, California, and September 22, 2002 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California.
In 2002, Zvartnots Dance Ensemble performed a new concert titled "Nor Hayastan" in Glendale, California. Thereafter, in 2003, the members of The Armenian Dance Center were able to give another performance entitled "Hayots Guyner" after which they prepared to yet again perform in their homeland.
In the summer of 2003, over 200 members of The Armenian Dance Center gained the opportunity to perform on the very soil their ancestors had once walked on. Standing ovations were received for performances that were given in the cities of Yerevan, Abovyan, and Armavir. Upon returning back to the states, in October of 2004, the members of The Armenian Dance Center presented to their community "Armenian Rhythms."
In December of 2004, Zvartnots Dance Ensemble celebrated their 15th year of tutelage to the Armenian Community, both in the United Stated and abroad. On December 4, 2004, the group presented an astonishing and beyond belief concert titled "Our Dances," and on December 19, traveled to Malta to compete in an International Dance Festival. Amongst the other 9 competing countries, Zvartnots Dance Ensemble represented its homeland, Armenia, and achieved the first place gold medal while doing so. In July of 2005, the group was invited to participate in an Armenian Festival held in Montreal, Canada.
On January 28, 2007, Zvartnots Dance Ensemble had a performance in Glendale, California titled "Hayots Khachkarer", where the received numerous standing ovations and came out with a new premiere dance entitled, "Zvartnots". Armenian Dance Center also had a performance on May 13, 2007 entitled "Pareri Ashkhar" in Glendale, California.
Aside from the dancers of Zvartnots, over 200 other students participate at The Armenian Dance Center under choreographers Vartan and Armine Aghajanyan. Zvartnots Dance Ensemble is well known as the only group in Los Angeles whose program consists solely of Armenian Folk Dances. After 18 years of hard work and dedication, by the students and even more by the choreographers, the participants of The Armenian Dance Center hope to travel to many different countries all over the world and share the culture and heritage of their ancestry.
